Hi, there! So glad you’re here. I write books for kids of all ages, so that means you.

Leigh Lewis’ visit is perfect for any school looking for an engaging, integrated author visit experience! With connections to poetry, nonfiction, STEAM and history, there are countless entry points for collaboration. Leigh provides materials to prepare for this visit, opportunities for student participation and group writing during her presentation and extension materials to keep the learning going long after visit day. The navigation workshop in particular was amazing and unlike anything I’ve ever been able to offer my elementary students. We were fascinated by the stories Leigh shared and felt inspired to learn more. Pirate Queens has been flying off our library shelves ever since!

Leigh made the topic so engaging for my 5th grade students. My class was completely wrapped up in her storytelling. Leigh told stories, shared her research, read poems, and had my students make a working compass out of a magnet, cork and floating needle (safely!). The class talked about her visit and the Pirate Queens for days afterward. My class and I would highly recommend Pirate Queens and a visit by Leigh Lewis!

About the Author

Leigh Lewis is a children’s writer and poet who dreams up stories for kids of all ages, buoyed by an amazing crew—her Turkish delight of a husband and their three swashbuckling daughters. Her adventures on the high seas have enabled her to call many places home, including Turkey, Greece, Japan, England and Russia, and she eventually navigated her way back to her hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

The students in my 5th grade class were enthralled learning about the fierce women in Pirate Queens, and it was the perfect way to celebrate Women’s History Month. Leigh kept them on the edge of their seats with real-life pirate tales, made poetry fun and interactive, and lifted the curtain on how books are made. I would eagerly have the author back as many times as she would come. I hope for another Pirate Queens school visit with my class next year!
